The three most important characters of the book are Mattie, Pa, and Grace (the dead one)
Mattie:
Mattie is a hard worker- "What if you had three sisters to look after and a big damn farm is nothing but endless work." Pg.35
She independent -"If Pa said no to the Glenmore, which is only few miles up the road, what on earth would he say to New York City." Pg.25
She cares about education- "I kept my precious dictionary there" Pg. 14
Description: "My other sisters, like me, take after our mother. Brown eyes. Brown hair." Pg. 16
Based on the evidence we found in these quotes, we infer that Mattie is a hard working, independent, and self educated woman who doesn't like her life they way it is now. She wants to branch out from her family and explore the world for herself.
Pa:
He counts on Mattie to help him run the farm- "He was no doubt expecting to see some of it in his mush." Pg.10
His presence is somewhat intimidating to his children, all of them fear his unpredictable temper: Pa's got a quick backhand and little patience for sulks or tears." Pg.25
"Pa's going to tan your all, Beth." Pg.9
Based on the quotes given, we feel that "Pa" is a hard headed man who likes things to be one specific way and nothing else. When Pa doesn't see things going his way, or hears of change he could get violent and lash out on the kids.
Dead girl:
She was poor did not have a lot of nice things: "She did not look like she had much money" Pg.5
She is dead: "Her eyes are dull and empty. her skin has gone the yellow of muscatel wine. there is an ugly gash on her forehead and her lips are bruised" Pg.4
She had something to hide: "She took a few more from her purse, undid the ribbon around them, tied all the letters together, and asked me to burn them." Pg.41
Based on the evidence given, we know that the dead girl is poor, and is hiding something about herself from everyone. We don't know how she ended up dead, so her existence and death are both a mystery.
